I woke up with this quote echoing in my head. Come to find out, the original is actually “Go Big or Go Home”, but I like the revised version. If you don’t have a big dream, it’s kind of difficult to go big, wouldn’t you agree?
What are your big dreams? Do you have a big dream? If not, what stops you from dreaming big?
In my work as The Naked Life Coach I’ve seen people of all ages, from all walks of life. The #1 thing they all have in common is that they have a dream that’s bigger than they are. They come to me for the nurturing and training they need in order to grow into the person they wish to become.
Along with all those big dreams, I’ve seen the big challenges they face. Here’s a small sample of these challenges which are often disguised as reasons or excuses:
I’m afraid
This is the single biggest obstacle most people face when following their dreams. Heck, it stops many from even deciding what their dreams actually are! Fortunately, there are quite a few easy and simple ways to overcome fear, both to discover AND pursue your dreams.
I don’t know how
With the wealth of information now available to us at the touch of a finger via the internet, you can learn almost anything online, as well as easily find a teacher or mentor to learn from. However, the danger here is to get stuck in the learning phase and never move on to the “doing” phase. In Naked Life Coaching I often combine the teaching & doing phases with practical experiments to do, so my clients are learning experientially.
I can’t
This one usually comes from the “I don’t know how” category of thought. With the proper preparation, we CAN do ANYTHING! The main obstacle is our own beliefs. Henry Ford (who invented the assembly line in order to achieve his dream of producing a motor vehicle which the average person could afford) said “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right”. Shifting your belief to “I can” is a key element to reach your dreams.
I’ll try
Ok, don’t make me quote Yoda at you! “Do or Do Not, there is no try!” I challenge you to eliminate this word from your vocabulary. Make a game of it! Every time you say the word, put a dollar in your dream savings plan. Enlist your family, friends or coworkers to help spot you if you say this word.
Maybe someday…
Someday never comes. It’s now or never. Can you find 5 minutes today to work on your dream? If you keep putting it off you’ll never start. Conversely, when you DO begin to make a path toward your dreams, your new alignment will bring unexpected resources to your benefit.
I don’t have the money
This challenge comes from a lack mentality. So, in order to overcome it, we must first address that mental state. And the quickest way to do that is to start looking at all the areas where you have enough. Did you have enough to eat today? Did you have enough smiles today? Did you have enough (fill in the blank)? Shift your focus from what you don’t have, to what you DO have.
I don’t have the time
The thing about dreams is, you have to MAKE the time! Ok, this may seem like an insurmountable challenge, after all, there are only so many hours in the day, right? And you have work, kids, the chores, etc. Not to mention time spent sleeping, eating, working, etc. But you have to start somewhere, even if it’s only for 5 or 10 minutes a day… I use my unique time management system to keep in schedule for creating my dreams.
I have other obligations
Your first and foremost obligation is to yourself. If you don’t take care of you, you’ll soon be unable to take care of others. So, you need to make a plan, and then you need to share the plan. Enlist the support and/or the understanding from those you feel obligated to. Besides, what beneficial effect could fulfilling your dream have for those people around you?
People will think I’m crazy if I…
So what? Life is too short to put your dreams on the shelf because of what someone else might think. Remember, the people we call heroes today, the great inventors and explorers, were all considered crazy at one point. Until they succeeded. But you have to start in order to finish!
It’s too hard
Everything seems hard before you learn how to do it. Walking probably seemed hard, yet you persevered and you learned how to do that, and now it’s so easy you don’t even think about it, do you? You learned how to read… You learned how to talk. What else have you learned over the course of your life? You can learn how to follow your dreams with that same perseverance you used to learn how to walk. And soon enough, it will be easy, just like all those other things you’ve learned how to do!
It will take too long
You know what? The time will pass anyway! 5 years from now will still be 5 years from now, whether you spend it working towards your dreams or not! Why not spend it doing what you love?
